The Certificate in Islamic Finance is a beginners course over a four day period. The course will cover:
- Historical development of Islamic Finance
- Interest (Riba) and other prohibited elements in Islamic commercial law.
- Islamic Law of Contract
- Traditional Modes of financing (Musharakah, Mudharabah)
- Concept of Sale in Islam (Bai' Mu'ajjal, Bai Murabaha, Bai' Salam, Bai'Tawarruq)
- Introduction to risk (Takaful)
The Diploma is a ten-day course, developed on the foundations laid by the certificate course, which is studied in the first four days.
The course will explore three main areas of Islamic Finance:
- Takaful Risk management from an Islamic perspective
- Fundamental of Takaful contracts: Kafala, Tabarru' and Waqf
- Takaful Models and some Fiqhi dimensions related to the models

- Traditional Modes of financing
- Fixed Return modes of financing: Bay' al-Murabaha, al-Istithna', al-Salam and Ijarah
- Venture capital
- Tawarruq
- Credit cards
- Regulatory Framework for IFI.
- Risk Management models in the Islamic Financial Market
Stock exchange
- Concept of shares and limited companies
- Filtering criteria to buy shares
- Derivatives
- Unit trust
- Hedging techniques
- Securitisation and Sukuk
Minimum requirements:
For the certificate course students must hold at least two "A" levels or its equivalent and for the Diploma course students should have two "A" levels and must have attended the ‘Certificate in Islamic Finance'. Competency in English language is a prerequisite for both the Certificate and Diploma courses. Students are expected to have some basic mathematical background and an interest in the field of Islamic Finance. Students seeking progression to the MA degree should have an undergraduate degree, part professional qualification and/or appropriate professional expertise.
N.B. Subject to an interview, MIHE may enrol those who do not have the necessary entrance qualifications but can demonstrate experiential learning and interest in Islamic Finance.
No entry requirement is necessary for those intending to obtain a Certificate of Attendance only.
